The Hungry Thirties
In the 1930s, the effects of the Great Depression
and a severe drought in the Prairies provinces,
led to an unprecedented economical crisis in Canada.
A considerable number of people became unemployed and homeless.
These are some images from the decade known as The Hungry Thirties.
It was a time when only a few people had access to a camera. These records might not entirely reflect what was happening. They are just samples of what was recorded and preserved.
